The Layer Player: Mastering Winter Formal Wear
What to Wear Over a Formal Dress When It's Cold
What happens when you’re dressed to the nines and ready to step out, but winter has other plans? This post is your style cheat sheet for staying warm, without having to hide your fabulous formal dress. So, what do you wear over a formal dress when you’re cold? Let’s unpack this question. Whether it’s a coat, a shawl, or a fur, there are many options to stay warm without ruining your whole outfit. A fur adds a nice luxurious touch whilst keeping you warm, and a shawl may not keep you as warm, but it does not ruin your outfit. Coats can be complicated as they may be bulky. Although Dress for a Night offers stunning rental dresses, you will need to bring your outerwear to complete the ultimate winter-ready ensemble.
Mastering Winter Formal Wear
Here are some of the best options for what to wear over a formal dress when cold, where to wear them, and how to style them correctly.
-
Tailored coats
A tailored coat is my favorite. The exuding of sophistication and class, whilst keeping you appropriately warm, tailored coats are made from all fabrics. It is important to dress accordingly to your occasion. Always keep in mind that a coat can be bulky, so if you can wear it as a cover-up outside, I would recommend not wearing it while inside. A coat can be appropriate for any special event during the wintertime, however, it is essential not to overpower your look with a coat. Wearing a simple coat in neutral colours and black is always a little bit more understated compared to something like a fur coat.
-
Faux fur jackets
A faux fur jacket is a great option for keeping you warm, with this option it is essential to not overpower the event. Meaning, this is not an appropriate style for an event such as a wedding or a black tie event. In my opinion faux fur jackets are a little bit costumey, if you have a formal event or gala dinner a faux fur jacket could be a great, be careful not to dress up a fur coat to much with extra accessories and jewellery, the fur coat is a statement in itself to avoid a costume look.
-
Cropped blazers
Cropped blazers are having their moment! A great way to keep the formality of your outfit whilst staying warm, I would recommend only styling this option with a skirt or pants; a dress may make your look a little uncoordinated. A cropped blazer is perfect for a formal occasion, however, I would stay away from black tie with a cropped blazer.
-
Boleros
A bolero is another great option for what to wear over a formal dress when cold, this is another simpler option for a less formal event. If you are wearing a short-sleeved dress, a bolero is a great way of keeping warm. Boleros are not known for their ability to keep warm, so ensure that you are not going to be outside during your event to avoid the extra chill! Never be afraid to accessorize with a bolero, statement earrings, nice jewellery, and to finish it all off, a beautiful dress that won’t be overshadowed by your bolero.
-
Capelets and shawls
Caps and shawls are my favorite option personally, I think they look effortless and timeless. Again, they may not be the best at keeping you cold, but instead of being an accessory to your outfit, they enhance the look of your formal dress. Available so many different patterns and fabrics available, there are endless possibilities.
Winter Wedding Guest Looks: What to Layer and How to Wear it
Style tips for:
-
Black-tie weddings (think floor-length coats, faux fur stoles)
A black tie wedding in the wintertime means finding something to wear over a formal dress when cold. Think about floor length coats, faux fur stoles, when srtylising for a black tie wedding when it;s cold it;s essetnial not to over power o=our outfit or potentially dress is down with a jacket, a caplets or shawl is perfect for this occasion, or a floor length coat, either will complete our outfit instead of overpower it. When considering a dress, don’t look past a long-sleeved option; these can be great for an occasion such as this.
-
Cocktail weddings (cropped jackets, tailored wraps)
A cocktail wedding calls for something a little less dressy, think about a cropped jacket or a tailored wrap. A cropped jacket can be perfect with a midi dress or pants if they are appropriate for the occasion. If you are going for a more understated look, a tailored wrap can be perfect to keep you warm as well.
-
Garden ceremonies (shawls, structured blazers, dressy trenches)
There are many things to think about when layering for a garden ceremony. If it is being held outside in a cold location, look no further than a dressy trench or a structured blazer, potentially even a long-sleeved dress underneath. It is important to still keep the formal theme, so stay away from oversized or anything too cropped, something with structure to elevate your outfit. If you are going for a simpler look, a shawl may be your perfect option!
Formal Dress and Coat Outfit Pairings That Work
Let’s discuss the dos and don’ts of what to wear over a formal dress when cold, being realistic, would you ever wear a mini dress and a long coat to a formal event in the middle of winter… no. Or a cropped blazer or jacket with a black tie, floor floor-length gown? Also, a no-go. So, instead, here are some options to consider;
For a formal event, maybe more cocktail, consider the iconic combo of a trench coat and a sheath dress, or a cropped blazer but with a midi dress. These are known as perfect combos to keep you warm whilst elevating your outfit.
For a more formal or black tie event, consider a faux fur shawl with a floor-length gown.

Winter Cocktail Attire: Layering for Semi Formal Events
When styling and layering for a more semi-formal event in the colder months, it can be difficult to know what is appropriate and what different options to consider. If you are looking for some guidance for semi-formal options, look no further.
-
Oversized coats worn off-shoulder
This style of coat is still elegant and classy, however keeps your look a little bit more low-key, suited for a more semi-formal event. If you want to wear something off the shoulder, ensure that it is not too structured to keep the off-the-shoulder look.
-
Satin shawls
A satin shawl is a more formal option to keep you warm at a semi-formal occasion, This is the most elegant look for a semi-formal event, however, I would recommend a warmer dress option, as a shawl is not known for keeping you warm! Remember to accessorise with a shawl, as they are quite simple, some gloves can elevate your outfit, or a textured tight sweater can go a long way!
-
Dressy knits and cropped jackets
A dressy knit and cropped jacket is perfect for an elevated outfit, I would not recommend a dressy knot for any type of formal event, however, a cropped jacket can give you the same vibe whilst keeping the coordination of your outfit together.
How to Style Your Cover Up Over a Dress
-
Belt a coat for shape
Belts are so in at the moment! Have a look at pinterest, instagram and tik tok, not only are belt’s practical for an outfit but tey can be used to create more shape for an outfit, if you are looking to elevate your outfit consider using a belt over your dress, if it is more flowy and you are looking for some structure this is the perfect thing to do. Does your coat make you look bulky? Use a belt around the coat, it’s the perfect way to elegantly elevate your outfit and give it some shape!
-
Choose luxe fabrics like velvet or faux fur.
Luxurious fabrics can make all the difference to your outfit, however, it can be difficult to know what will keep you warm. Something like a satin or linen fabric is not known for its warmth; try and keep these for the warmer months. However, a fabric such as velvet or faux fur is great for elevating your outfit.
-
Consider heating, outdoor time, and transport when picking your layer.
When picking your layer, always remember to consider the heating and the time you will be spending outside. It is always best to wear something with layers that can be removed, such as a coat or shawl. A long-sleeved dress is a great option if you are in the same venue the whole time.
