Dress Code for a Ball
Formal Ball Attire
Before you even start shopping, take a moment to check the dress code. Ball attire falls into one of two categories being formal or black tie, which means long formal dresses and gowns are non-negotiable. Can You Wear a Short Dress to a Ball?
This is one of the most common questions I get and the answer really comes down to the type of ball you’re attending and how strict the dress code is.
Traditionally, balls are formal or black-tie events, which usually means long gowns are expected. There’s something about a floor-length dress that instantly elevates your look and complements the atmosphere of the evening.
That said, some more modern or semi-formal balls may be a little more flexible. If the invite says cocktail or doesn’t specify a strict dress code, a shorter dress can work — but be sure to choose a style that is elegant and elevated. Think structured styles in luxe fabrics or details such as a corset bodice or statement neckline.
The key is to find balance. If you’re going shorter on length, go elevated with everything else from your accessories to hair, heels, and confidence. And if you’re ever unsure, don’t be afraid to ask the host or check what others are planning to wear. Cool Undertones
If you have a cool undertone, this means your skin has a blue hue. The most complimentary colours to wear would be anything that has a blue or purple undertone including jewel tones, cool blues and purples, and cool pinks. True reds and icy pastels can also be flattering for if you're wanting to make a statement with colour.
Warm Undertones
If you have a warm undertone, this means your skin has a golden hue. The most complimentary colours to wear are earthy shades and rich, vibrant colours with warm tones. Golden yellows, warm oranges, olive greens, deep browns and warm reds beautifully enhance the natural warmth of the skin. Metallics such as gold and copper are also great colours to choose from, especially for a ball.
Neutral Undertones
For those with neutral undertones, meaning neither cool or warm, will find that the most complimentary colours for their skin tone are neutrals, soft warm colours such as muted reds, peach, coral and golden yellows, soft blues and greens such as steel blue, turquoise, teal and sage, as well as lilac. For neutral undertones, it's best to avoid vibrant yellows and colours that lean too cool or warm.
It's also important to take into account hair and eye colour as neutral skin tones typically have a mix of warm and cool features. So instead of just looking at skin tone, consider how different colours complement all your features.
